LIVIN' THE YELLOWFIN DREAM

"Well we keep livin' the dream "Days on our boats full of screaming reels, rampaging tuna and happy anglers. Billfisher and Broadbill have enjoyed a brilliant tuna season since mid May. We have broken many a tuna virgin and have had the pleasure of being apart of many great fights.
It does make the life of us professional Captains so much easier and more contenting when the fish are here.

I personally have had the pleasure over my fourty years of tuna fishing of experiencing many epic battles, many exhausted anglers, many high fives on these brutal powerful sportfish and every battle is enjoyed just as much by me as the angler.

They simply are the most powerful fish pound for pound that swims and that says it all.

AUSSIE CHAMPION SPEARO'S DECIDE TO JUMP IN WITH THEM

Last week Aussie champion spearo Ian Puckeridge, Adrian and Steve Wayne dived into the bluewater off the transom of Billfisher to try their luck at dodging the makos and spearing a tuna. The boys speared one but it got away. They reckoned it was a buzz seeing them flying around in the berley slick.

Ian Pucko hands the bear gun to Steve Aussie legend spearo Pucko the boys had a great day on Billfisher

They say a picture says a thousand words so we have put together a photo collage of the many great days of wild tuna action this month on our boats.

THE MOUNTAIN MEN AND THE BOYS FROM THE BUSH …by…ROSS HUNTER
A GREAT DAY ON THE YELLOWFIN ON BROADBILL

Just a short report on a great day on Broadbill and Billfisher yesterday…A day, when we were hand feeding 30 to 38kg tuna at the back of the boat.in the dark.
It all started when the "Bathurst Boys from the Bush" (Steve Mc Cauley , Shane and John) Teamed up with the Kurrajong (Mountain Men) Big Bob Pickworth's Boys, Rob and Roger.

They had a yearning to chance their luck on Broadbill on the red-hot tuna fishing we have been enjoying since May.

Having arrived at the desired location around 4 miles south of Browns, away a bit from the crowds that were gathered there on such a superb Spring like day.
We started to cube, cutting pilchards and tuna oil. John and Nathan Giles were the cube-masters.

Bob Pickworth gets the stretch out with John The Human Bollard looking on with the whopper stopper The boys from Bathurst have a great day on some big tuna

40KG of Powerhouse A great fish that fought hard an angler's first

It was early, around 11.30, to early really, but we were there and maybe the fish would break tradition and bite early, thus giving me and my crew an early night instead of putting Broady in the pen a t 8.30 pm.

Not to be, nothing happens for hours, not a run . I get out the guitar play a few songs, tell a few yarns of fishing tales gone by, anything to keep the boys spirits up There were comments like "Maybe there not here today" bearing in mind that they knew that we only caught one fish on the Saturday having found them hard to find.

A brisk reply from the Skipper kept the dream alive "To early boys! ,……Remember this sort of fishing is hours of boredom punctuated by moments of extreme excitement……now let's keep the faith and the karma" I suggested. "We must think positive negatives are not allowed, the fish can pick up negative vibes" I added in jest.

The excitement came at 3.30pm when the big Shimano screamed in panic….The moments of extreme excitement had arrived and boredom had left …our first tuna bite.
It was Bathurst's Steve McCauley who was about to get his arms stretched on a superb fish of close to 40 kg.

He played the fish like a veteran as crewman John Giles "The Human bollard" who weighs 63 kg's stood by with the whopper stopper (The huge 30 year old long handled tuna gaff custom made to gaff tuna).

The fish weighed 20 kilos less than John and as he sunk the big gaff into the fish it was the gaff-man who was being grabbed by the ankles as the fish took off with gaff attached to crew man all heading to the bottom to-gether We grabbed Johns legs and pulled him and the tuna back into the cockpit.

All was well as John looked like a drowned rat from the spay of activity, but the bollard never lets go!

Then they came in numbers just like an approaching army almost frightening we were being overtaken.

Roger was next to equalise the score….. Mountain Men 1, Boys from the Bush 1

The big fish kept coming…. Next were Bob then Robert then John (all tuna virgins)

It was now dark as we played number eight, having called a halt to the action at 6.35pm to watch the yellowfin feed on the cubes at the back of the boat and swim off in the deck lights A great sight for all of us.

We reckoned we had caught enough, so it was a waste to take any more.
I gave it as a tie…and no one was arguing …..A great day on some beaut fish.

Glenn Hunter on Billfisher caught 6…………. So 14 yellowfin for the boats meant a lot of smiles on dials….and that's how it should be!

Bob Pickworth his his great tuna The sun sinks slowly in the west

Another busy day on Broadbill Billfisher caught a heap as well
