A REASONABLE YELLOWFIN SEASON ON BROADBILL AND BILLFISHER by Captains Ross and Glenn Hunter   DECEMBER ‘07

I thought it appropriate to do a round up of some of the better “yellowfin catch photos” for the season on our boats.

The winter run of fish was a toughie and whilst there were some big yellowfin tuna and bluefin caught these were in the minority and many of those boats that did catch them, were not to see another tuna all season.

A big bluefin on Marquis A good fish on Billfisher

A great catch of albacore on Glenn Hunter's Billfisher last week A late Nov fish on Broadbill

albys on bfisher Nov Anthony Chaffey with his tuna

Chris Hoile holds up a good fish on Billfisher Craig Kermod's yellowfin...fresh sashimi yum

Eduardo's big mahi Emu Steve with one of his tuna caught on Broadbill last week

I caught two I'm happy too Jeez they pull hard

John Vassala with tuna and albacore Late Oct was good Smaller fish but lots of fun

There were patches of brilliance in Spring where we caught them for a few weeks on every trip that was back in August, Sept. and October. This run of yellowfin were probably the biggest (up to 40kg) the average 20 to 25kg.

We cubed on the wider grounds and caught fish to 40kg, but no really big boys.
We then had a great run of albacore and worked these fabulous little fighters on lures until they disappeared in late October.

Maroubra's Gavin Strong is a great versatile fisherman One from the great '96 season

our favourites bibless minnows They can be dynamite on yellow Peter Hunter's crew had a great day on Sunday on Billfisher

Playing a good one in Spring The boys from Bathurst caught them again

The boys hold up their first yellowfin The late David Bartz with a great tuna in 2006 season

The Spring fish were bigger Then came the albies

They got smaller in November We had to work hard but the Bloodshot lures served us well on some good albacore

We may see the return of big tuna in seasons to come We took fish like this for granted once

Yellowfin and albies Broadbill yellowfin and albys in late oct on Broadbill

ALBACORE TECHNIQUES

The best technique was to use the sounder to locate the bait source and schooling albacore and then never leave it. Most times we would work an area of a square kilometre and catch fish all day.
We trolled Bloodshot jets and bib less minnows only and these worked a treat all season.

There is a theory that “You should never leave fish to find fish” the old greener pastures thought and nothing is truer when it comes to catching albacore.

I do recall a couple of very active days when we had bagged out in 1.5 hours on them.
The fish averaged from 4 to 14kg without doubt my favourite eating tuna (chicken of the Sea), leaving yellowfin for dead.

During late October and all November we caught lots of fish all trolled and all smallish up to 15kg Great fun on light tackle and they certainly put smiles on dials for our anglers.

Summarising the ’07 season it was a mediocre season, both Glenn and myself had to work hard and fish very wide also using the many years of experience to find fish for our clients, we did that most days, but there were the tough times when we could not even catch a stripey.

NO FISH

That is never good for us dedicated Captains who are proud of our family tradition when we do not catch fish and we hate it ( after all we are third generation fishermen and we love to catch fish, that’s what we get paid for, but alas as long as we go to sea there will be those bad days……..that’s why they call it fishin’) We resolve on those bad days that we have given our normal 110% and the fish simply are not there and that then means we are fishing for ghosts and they are really hard to catch.

SPOILT BY THE ’96 TUNA SEASON

The ’96 season was brilliant and maybe we were all spoilt but I am most confident now that with the retirement of over 80% of the east coats long line fleet having accepted the Liberal Governments buy out, we will see a comeback of the yellowfin stocks.

We may even see the return of fish along the shelf line and even at the 12 mile and the Peak………………How good would that be!

MANAGEMENT OF PELAGIC STOCKS IN THE FUTURE

The return of our tuna stocks will be a slow rebuild, such is the damage caused by over fishing by Ozzie long liners and more so the International fleet, however as with all of our stocks that have been overfished such as gemfish, kingfish, orange roughy, swordfish and southern bluefin a slow rebuild will occur, given qu0ta systems and good management by the authorities…………….let’s hope they can see into the future before it is too late!

We are seeing the odd striped marlin on our last trip or two but by and large fishing has been quite .
This is about to change as the current patterns are brilliant, so look out for some great fishing late December and January.

WE JOIN THE NAUTILUS INSURANCE GROUP

NAUTILUS MARINE INSURANCE AND THE HUNTER LADS

It was February last year at Pt Stephens when Ian Frith, Mark Crockford and Jared Kaplan invited Glenn and myself and our vessels BROADBILL and BILLFISHER to join the NAUTILUS INSURANCE TEAM.

Having known Ian Frith as a personal friend and observed from a distance the inroads he had made in marine insurance, there were no second thoughts; Glenn and I were there, decision made.

“Frithy” is a champion man who has been around the fishing scene all his life, it is this hands on experience that gives him the edge in understanding the finer points of fisherman’s specialised needs when insuring their boats and equipment

To be a part of a winning team headed up by these guys is a privilege, not only the fact that were invited to represent the Nautilus group as their flag ships from the charter industry ( a choice of which we both feel most honoured) but also because they are a bunch of good blokes who understand the fisherman’s insurance needs and we are proud also to put our names and reputations on the line without a second thought.

Nautilus insure all recreational vessels and commercial as well…The fact that Broadbill and Billfisher are both insured with Nautilus is testimony enough in our belief in this great insurer.

We recommend that if you are looking to insure your vessel that you give Nautilus a call and get a quote …………they simply are the most efficient way of insuring your vessel and the price and service that will have you smiling.

SYDNEY IS FISHING SO WELL FOR YELLOWFIN AND ALBACORE

We predicted a late season and for once the crystal ball worked, both Captain Ross and Glenn have been “bringing home the bacon” or is it tuna.

Over past few trips we have not missed out giving our anglers some action packed trips on albacore to 12kgs and yellowfin to 38kg.

We have fished the higher latitudes and have caught some great fish in these zones.
Bernhard’s group scored well with yellowfin last week as did Peter’s crew, then Peter Hunter and

Frank Venesia's crew excelled on Broadbill when we ran over a couple of really good fin in a school.

All fish were caught on bib less minnows and bloodshot jets.

The photos tell it all “SMILES ON DIALS” That makes for happy customers.

A fun day A good catch of yellowfin All caught on bibless minnows

A great fish caught Sunday Bloodshot lure guru John Scalleki Holds up a victim of his fabulous lures

Frank and his team had a great day on Broadbill last week Greg Towle He's caught them before

Hooked up and fighting I caught one too

Love me love my tuna My first tuna

Our great friends from Sylvania marina on Lockout also got lucky when Captain Amien was feeding out a lure only to have it ripped from his hand by a 50 kg tuna It was Emil Sipkovsky’s strike and he did a great job on the rod to land the big fish They also caught a good dollie. They were fishing next to us when the hook up occurred.

We still have a few weekends available on BROADBILL and BILLFISHER before Xmas

Ring 9534 2378 to book

Amien's Lockout crew had agreat day last week Emil's big tuna

"ON THE HOOK" with Captains Ross and Glenn Hunter
5th June 2007

Having just returned from four days trout fishing at Jindabyne with my good friend and compatriot in crime Gordon Johnson. Some say to me "Why would you want to go fishing when that's what you do for a living?" My reply is always "There is something beautiful and totally contenting in wandering a pristine stream like the Thredbo and polarioding a big brown trout".

A fish that has great eyesight and senses and did not get to be a big trout from being silly.

It is the guile and cunning in the presentation of a fly to a wary fish and then the satisfaction if you actually do it well enough, you may even catch it"

It's one of fishing's great challenges.

We have trudged the River for many years and we know that if it rains in the mountains then look out because that's when the big boys bite and bite well.

Both Gordon and myself fished in gale winds on two of the days, winds so strong that you could hear the onslort coming like a freight train roaring down the river, we would brace ourselves and wait for the blast to pass and then continue fishing. One gust all but blew my beanie off my head and after catching some of those big browns I was getting pretty big headed I can tell you.

We bagged out most days on big browns to 6lb and really did have a wonderful time.
All fish were caught on nymphs above a glow bug.

A wonderful trip and a big thanks goes to our new acquaintance "Mud Eye Mick" who taught us a couple of fly fishing tips that helped us to catch fish in the strong winds.

We also met up with our annual friend Lowther from Victoria This guy is a great fly fisherman and once again we hang on every word of advice he gives us. One of the great things about any form of fishing is that it always pays to listen to others who know more than you do….It is a quick way to learn ( see Lowther's photo of his huge brown trout)

A fine Thredbo brown Cold Yes! It's freezing but who cares when your catching brown trout like this. A great reward for Roscoe

Concentration plus It was the fish of the trip and we wanted to land it Gordo crossing the Thredbo.

Gordon's brown Louther's big brown

Mud Eye Mick with a nice Thredbo Brown.. It was released On the Thredbo It was a great year with some big fish

Ross's two browns caught on a nymph in the Thredbo The magnificent Thredbo River

THE OCEANIC SCENE (A LITTLE QUITE BUT READY TO FIRE SOON)

We are still waiting for the yellowfin run and whilst we did catch a few 30kg tuna two weeks back, the past few weeks have been fruitless. There is light at the end of the tunnel however as the tidal currents really are looking better for the next few weeks. We are most confident that the tuna will show and show with a vengeance in the next week or two.

The isotherm that is not far away now should hold fish  The last few trips has seen hundreds of striped tuna and although cubed until dark did not turn a reel on the yellowfin.

We did have the best season last year for a decade and I cannot see why the fish will not be just as good this year .(see some of last years photos of great days on the tuna We really did exceptionally well for our customers rarely missing good catches).

Winghams David Bartz..Getting into the blood and guts of it Joes fish gets close Soxie gets ready with the gaff

GREAT CATCHES OF SNAPPER

There has been some really good catches o of snapper to 4.5 kg from the southern waters Pat Diasnos on his boat Yum Yum had a good catch last week. The fish were caught on floaters in 60 metres of water off Pt Hacking.

The shallow reefs off Coogee have also yielded some nice reds last week Once again from the 60-metre depth and fishing light line and floaters.
I have fished the Georges on the tides over the past weeks and have not missed a feed of blackfish, some days better than others Next week the tides will be better and the Georges and Pt Hacking will produce well.

Snapper like this can be caught on floaters from now through Winter

TIPS FOR THE NEXT FORTNIGHT
BLACKFISH IN THE GEORGES, SNAPPER OFFSHORE ON FLOATERS AND DEFINITELY YELLOWFIN TUNA OUT WIDE.

BOOK NOW FOR TUNA TRIPS

For those wanting to catch yellowfin do not wait until the word gets out book now and get the run up to the full moon that puts you in the best window of opportunity to do well. The fish are just around the corner and will be on soon.

We have some share trips $250.00 per head or the full boat is $1500.00 per day for groups of 7 maximum.

ALBACORE,YELLOWFIN AND DOLPHIN FISH FRENZY CONTINUES ON BROADBILL AND BILLFISHER

Last report we caught great catches of big albacore on some days bagging out on BROADBILL and BILLFISHER..Well we’ve kept the dream alive with more great catches most trips.

The yellowfin have been around the 10 to 14kg size, only small, but great fun never the less. Albies have been up to 15kg and great sport on light gear and so much better to eat than yellowfin. We also encountered dolphin fish last week .

Having hooked up the first dollie of the season , the angler Eduardo was doing a great job on the rod, from the bridge I noticed we had four others to 18 or so kilos follow it up , however we did not have any pillies to throw so they swam off after the fish was caught.

The Wanda surf club boys Hads a great day on Billfisher The Wanda surf club team led by Tait Brannock fished on Billfisher

Yellowfin and Bloodshot lure A great combination Anthony Chaffey with his tuna

Ben Llyod and his tuna Double strike The Winch Anthony Chaffey and Ben dish it out

Eduardo plays his big mahi on Broadbill last Sunday Eduardo's big mahi

Eduardo's mahi and albacore Future marine bioligist Chris catches his first tuna I have a feeling it will not be his last

John Vassala with tuna and albacore

WANDA SURF club’s group headed up by Tait Brannock had a great day with Billfisher catching heaps of yellowfin they reckon the afterwards barbeque was fabulous.

My share charters on Sunday also had an action packed day Eduardo who caught the dolphin fish also came good with a nice alby as did Anthony Chaffey, Ben Llyod, Chris, Johnny Vassala and Paul all catching yellowfin and albies.

On Billfisher the lads from GMW URBAN P/L also caught yellowfin on Billfisher and worked hard for them, but that only makes it more exciting when the strikes to happen.

Whilst the fish have mostly been small there will always be that unknown factor that happens just ask Geoff Manson when he had a blind strike and when the reel kept screaming he knew it was a bigger fish...The fight lingered on and the result was a 30 kg pacific big eye tuna... a great effort well Done Geoff. (See photo)

We predicted the tuna run and also predicted that they would stay thru to December and we still think that will happen.
Marlin will show up on que soon and that pleases me...we have not raised one so far but look forward to that encounter maybe next trip.
Until then we will work the tuna, albies and dollies………..and that’s not all bad!

THE SPRING HATCH IS WHAT IS ATTRACTING THE FISH

The fish are feeding on Spring hatch of light fish and tiny squid, ascending from the ocean’s floor
This happens this time of the year as the tiny hatched fish and squid group up in schools having just hatched and that’s like having a free for all at the tuck shop for the schooled up albacore, yellowfin and stripeys as they feed ravenously on our tiny hatchlings.

The fish are being found north of Browns and wide of the southern Canyons

What a fabulous couple of weeks we have had on Billfisher and Broadbill. It has been a decade or more since we have had consistent catches of good sized albacore but they are back and back with a vengeance,

We have been trolling them on bib less minnows and jet heads and have sent many crews home with ample stocks of these great table fish.

This is “Hot Off the Press” info Broadbill and Billfisher scored well last weekend with some great catches of big albacore and the occasional yellowfin.

There is some fantastic water flowing through now which will bring a heap of tuna and albys and the marlin will be right up there as well.

The season has not been a patch on the ’06 tuna run, but between it all our boats have caught as many as any one , maybe more.

“If they are not there you won’t catch them” some wise man told me once and he was right.

I believe we will have a late run on the tuna and catch them right through to December …………………Time will tell if that prediction is right.

A great day on Sunday on Broadbill Brett Skinner catches a beauty

He also catches a yellowfin and a big alby Look what I caught Mum

Mansell catches his first tuna Warren Heywood's team headed up by Dean Thompson The lads had a ball on Broadbill bagging out on Albies

Yes it is a beauty Eh!

Our anglers headed up by Brett Skinner including Roy, Mansell and visiting USA angler Scotty caught did well on the Saturday on albies and yellowfin then on Sunday they really bit when we bagged out on Albies and Fin with Warren Heywood’s group Warren had travelled from Forster to join us and had a great day enjoying a blustery nor east day with fish snapping their heads off. Our crewman The Emu was running to keep up with the bite.

THE BIG DUNBOGAN GROGAN A HOTELY CONTESTED EVENT IN ‘07

This years the “Big Grogan” was fished hard and fast.

The young bloods, fishing in two boats made up of the “Coonas” and the “Crystal Cowboys”  worked their magic by thrashing every inch of the Camden Haven River with their soft plastics and they caught a heap of good flathead including the winning fish.

The teams made up from Glenn “The Captain” Hunter, Martin “Macka” Hunter Ricko “Koala” Clay, “Banana Bob” Cartwright, Paul “The Target” and Graham “The Tourist” Lees, the Moose and Bob the Road Runner Morgan..

Other arrival were Aqua Monster, Ian Redwood Rann and Roberta
Winners were ;

Biggest blackfish Banana Bob caught on a squidgy and still under investigation by the committee.
Biggest flathead……… Paul The Target with a 58cm gem
Blackfisherman’s trophy …Ross Hunter (recognised for fishing with a float and green weed not for jagging one on a soft plastic)

“ON THE HOOK” with ROSS and GLENN HUNTER
3/10/07

Well there’s a saying in fishing “Ya can’t catch ‘em all the time” and never a truer word has been said about the current situation.

One day we go wide and catch the hell out of the tuna, the next two trips almost fishless the tuna this season have really been so fickle and it has all us professional skippers scratching our heads.
Billfisher had a great trip last week and had them at the back of the boat with Darrell Mann’s group they caught some nice fish and also released a couple of makos.

Con hooks up solid and the fight is on The Emu gets the whopper stopper ready

The smile says it all They weren't big but they were welcomed

A big Mako joins our slick Great to look at A good fish on Billfisher

I caught one too Darell Mann get's lucky on Billfisher and he is a happy camper

Craig Kermod's yellowfin...fresh sashimi yum

On Broadbill we too scored with Craig Kermod and Costa’s group and in high spirits returned to do battle again the next day only to be skunked with only a few stripeys on the troll for our efforts...
It has been most frustrating but the good news is there is a great front of water almost on us and it

Until then we are going to fish the closer grounds for snapper and do a speculator on the tuna from time to time, will keep you posted if we find them.

STEVE “THE SHOOTER” ODELLI  CATCHES A 276 KG BLUEFIN

Long time charterer Steve “the Shooter” Odelli has caught many great fish on Broadbill and Billfisher, including yellowfin, marlin and snapper.

He is a beaut bloke and a very good angler and as keen as mustard to catch fish.
On a recent trip to New Zealand he caught a 276kg Southern Bluefin tuna on 37kg.

GIANT BLUEFIN playing giant bluefin

steves bluefin in boat

Steve said they pulled up at the back of the hoake boats and the huge tuna would feed on the trawler trash, it was as simple as feeding out a bait of hoake and “bingo” hang on. The bfirrst blistering run the big fish tiook 350 metres of 80lb line without stopping once…….now that’s a line burner. Steve took over 3 hours to catch the giant tuna
He reckoned they pull like a 38 class Newcastle Flyer.

Well done Steve and your friends a great effort.
The fish were brought back to Port and filleted then given to a home for underprivileged.

BLUSTERY DAY BUT A GOOD CATCH OF FLATTIES

A bloke has to be mad sometimes. We decided to lick our wounds and give away the wide grounds and the non existent tuna with a forecast that changed in the morning to be upgraded from light, nor east breezes to winds of 25 to 33 knots of horror.

The tuna had been scarce so we headed south…maybe some salmon on the way, maybe snapper or maybe some big blue spot flathead.

We had a beaut crew made up of Hardin, Josh, Nathan and Joe, so after a board meeting they agreed that the wide grounds were not sensible given the conditions and forecast.

Having trolled south close to the cliffs we encountered a school of salmon that were not in the least bit interested in our lures…”.bugger” I thought, a few of them would have been fun.

With trepidation we continue south, the weather is calm and it is a beautiful Spring day, except for the insects, moths and bugs….mmmm ..I thought it won’t be long.

Bugs means hot westerly winds at sea, the moths and insects always appear in front of a wind front if you ever encounter this phenomena and your at the Mountain then make your self scarce because your in for a pounding home.

We reached the flathead grounds and first drop a double on big blue spots just as the wind hit at 25 to 30 knots …….bugger I thought .

Blue spot flathead as an eating fish one of the best Josh,Hardin,Nathen and Joe ..The lads fished hard in 25 knots of wind for a good catch of Flathead

The lads worked hard in the blustery conditions all day and ended up with a great feed of good sized blue spot flatties. The biggest going 62 cm.

We were left with no other option because of the weather but the lads and I had a beaut day.
They were all great anglers and nice people and even in the 25 knot winds fished hard and laughed and joked all day and we all enjoyed making the best of the conditions.

We cruised back to Botany Bay and I was wishing we had a sail it would have saved a lot of fuel, but the seas were wind blown and white capped but from the sou west and it was a superb troll home on Broadbill as we took in the beautiful scenery of the area.
Wind who cares!

PREDICTIONS FOR NEXT FORTNIGHT

Both Glenn and myself believe we will have late run on the fin and as you all know You can go out and catch them when they are there, but when their not it’s frowns all round.

Some one will catch the first marlin for the season in the next fortnight and I hope it’s me.

Reef fishing for snapper may be worth a go but once the hot summers currents kick in the big boys become scarce but spring can be great for them all we need is some settled weather until next report.

A GREAT TUNA WEEKEND ON BILLFISHER AND BROADBILL

SPRING TUNA FRENZYand WE PREDICTED IT

We predicted tuna in September and for once the crystal ball worked when on the weekend Billfisher and Broadbill caught a swag.

On Saturday Billfisher taught me a fishing lesson when they caught them all and I couldn’t get a bite and then on Sunday it was my turn when we caught some reasonable fish to around 23 kg. All our anglers were tuna virgins and had a ball even despite some unusually sloppy conditions and big swells.

Double hook ups were common and the fun was continuos, bearing in mind we only fished on the cubes for two hours on account of the time it takes to get there and then back home, but if you load up with a good catch, then it’s worth it I guess….Where are the “Glory Days” when we used to catch them at the Peak bring them back I say!

It was Glenn Hunter on Billfisher who found them first with his charters from the company Tullet Prebond headed up by Wayne Marshal. The crew were all new to the wild action of tuna fishing and were thrilled to experience the gut busting action that only these fish can simulate.

A 22 kg beauty for for Dave on Broadbill last Sunday Billfisher got amongst them on Saturday

Brian enjoyed this one Happy you bet Double trouble ..we have a double hook up on Broadbill

Emu with a 22 kg specimen Harry Miriklis caught these beauties

Mark is no longer a tuna virgin Some were a lttle smaller but when it's your first it just doesn't matter

On Broady we sat abeam all day and never turned a reel , but that’s fishing , however that all turned around on the Sunday when it was our turn and we were running all day with the red hot tuna action.

Our charterers head up by Dave Bellingham who got a real work over on the biggest tuna of the day. Dave reckoned that they pull like draft horses.

We had an action packed day and caught some nice yellowfin and striped tuna.

We saw whales, dolphins, albatross and many other sea birds.

It was Mother Ocean on display at her best.

Another boat Nemo skippered by Harry Mirikilis also scored well on the tuna with two yellowfin around the 23kg size..so it is all happening out there.

I know you want me to tell you exactly where we caught the fish, but for safety reasons I will not…Both Glenn or myself will never encourage small trailer boats to go to the  “Badlands” if there were a disaster of any kind we don’t want that on our consciences.

The trip home took 4 hours but once inside the shelf the seas settled and it was a beautiful afternoon.

We also caught 9 striped tuna … they are salted down for our snapper trips in Spring to the southern Grounds. There are still a few of those big bumpies to catch before the summer currents kick in.

These tuna will stay with us now through to November and as the currents change will come in closes.

I'm happy too Jeez they pull hard More on Billfisher

You couldn't wipe the smile off his face with a mullet gut sandwich

VALE ……………..  PATRICK DIASINOS

Both Glenn and myself were devastated to hear of the passing of Pat last Friday.
He was returning from down south on his boat “Yum Yum” when he collapsed and died.

We have been moored next to Pat for many years and had many great days out on the ocean together. Pat and his partner Gary fished Pt Stephens with us on Broady and caught marlin and some great snapper to gether, there was never a dull moment when this pair were around. Great memories that we will treasure forever.

Glenn and myself and all at Sylvania marina offer our condolences to Pat’s wife and daughters .
We are still in disbelief and will miss his smiling face and quick wit forever.
(See photo of Yum Yum’s big bluefin.)

Patrick's 60 kg bluefin, recently caught on his boat Yum Yum..No one dreamed that this would be his last. We will all miss him The late Patrick Diasinos with best mate Harry Miriklis with their first marlin on Yum Yum

The last trip Pat made to his beloved snapper grounds...A man who was a great fisherman. We will miss him, but his memories will live on forever.

We were all so happy for Pat on his big day on the bluefin, little did we know it would be his last big fish….too sad. ……………………….. RIP my friend

“ON THE HOOK”….with Captains Ross and Glenn Hunter…
6th September ‘07

Broadbill and Billfisher have been working the southern snapper grounds, once again this week with mixed results.

Some days diamonds…some day’s stones, we have had some really great days and on others we have been jacketed badly and hit struggle street. However in saying that a bad day down south, is better than a bad day anywhere else.

On a bad day on the  Hump you will end up with maybe 6 to 8 reds, 6 mowies and a dozen big chinaman jackets.  That is a really bad day for us at the Hump.

To see a good day visit “Fishing Stories and Hints Section” on this site
When the leather jackets are in you will not have good snapper days.

Berley Bob and partner in crime with a couple of good reds Up the mighty rabbits

We worked hard all day This was the biggest snapper We worked hard all day Mike Essex with a good red

It's this sort of scenery that keeps us coming back south to the southern grounds

The snapper have gone off a little when compared to a month or so back and if you scroll back it is possible to see the change in size by the photos.

Personally I still believe that there is still some great snapper to be caught in the Spring as long as the southbound currents do not kick in too much.

We will continue visiting these grounds and will keep you informed on results as they come.
There are some great Hints in Fishing Stories and Hints on our techniques on how to catch on Floaters.

Mike Essex and his crew, who are fishing Pt Stephens ’08 in February with us, decided to try their hand at the reds and by and large had a great day.

We fished on a wild southerly morning  that dropped off in the afternoon leaving us with big swells, the lads fished hard all day and whilst we did catch a few good reds it was an accumulation of fish, rather than a brilliant day…………but that’s fishin’

We have had a great season on some big snapper and plenty of them and it has been a godsend while the yellowfin tuna have done a runner, but here is the HOT PRESS
THEY ARE BACK

“SPRING YELLOWFIN FEVER IT’S HIT THE FAN”

Yellowfin tuna are every sport fisherman’s favourite, they are a good table fish they fight like schoolyard bullies and pull like a d- 9 bulldozer.

Our boats BROADBILL AND BILLFISHER have accumulated many years of experience in figuring out the right water to fish and the best techniques on the day.

As a more senior Captain my credentials go back 40 years and I guess that I have forgotten more than I can remember when it comes to catching tuna.

I have had clients remind me of days gone by when we caught Quote “12 yellowfin and 10 albacore”…Days I have forgotten from a couple of decades ago. I do remember hand feeding a bunch of them one day … a day when we could slap a pilly on the water and the fish would bolt up out of the blue and take it from your hand That day we caught so many that we stopped catching and all enjoyed the spectacle.

Well! get that tuna rod out people and get ready because the fish are here and here in BIG numbers
I hate to advise people where we catch our fish because many have small trailer boats and I don’t want to be the one encouraging these sorts of boats to go out to these extremely wide grounds.

The fish are best down to the south of Botany and a long way out and that’s the best guide I can give…..I do not recommend small boats going  there. But that’s up to you
I do not want it on my conscience if there ever is a weather disaster and some don’t come back…Please be sensible.

So many people go to Browns Mountain believing that it is the only area that tuna live, That is so wrong we catch far more tuna by staying away from the place.
We have never and never will do the blue eye show, to me that‘s the bottom of the barrel type of fishing, sinking an 8lb sash weight down 2000feet and then winching it up hoping that one of those hideous things are on, that’s bullshit fishing.

There’s more in life than that in my fishing career, give me a challenge, a fish that fights and has to be earned any day.

THE HUNTER LADS TO DRIVE BRAND NEW 55 MARITIMO AT PT STEPHENS ‘08

What a privilege to be invited by long time friend and Pt Stephens exclusive Maritimo dealer Ken Stewart to drive one of the most exciting game boats The Maritimo 55 at Pt Stephens ‘08
.Ken and the Hunters go back 30 years to the days when we were all a lot younger and fished competitively for Sydney and Pt Hacking GF Clubs.

Ken in his boat “Bikini Two” and naturally myself on Broadbill. The Stewarts then bought the Soldiers Point Marina where we have kept our boats for three decades, so a long term friendship as well as a business relation ship was formed and I guess it was this association that encouraged Ken to offer Glenn and myself the boat for the season to drive.

This boat has to be seen to be believed, it is a credit to the lads at Maritimo.
Simply the best game boat that we have seen for a decade.

It is luxury combined with fish catching designed from the keel up as a Bluewater thoroughbred.
The big boat has every conceivable feature that any keen angler could ever want.

Both Glenn and myself cannot wait to test her out on the brilliant marlin grounds of Pt Stephens.

These are some of her features.
LOA ……………………………….....55 feet
Engines and horsepower……….. Twin Caterpillar C-18  1000HP each engine
Top speed………………………......38 knots

FISHRAIDERS TRI BOAT TOURNAMENT

After a great weekend on the tuna when Billfisher caught ten yellowfin we were all looking forward to our light hearted Fishraider challenge See report on http://www.fishraider.com.au

The three boats Fishfinder, Broadbill and Billfisher and their crews headed out bright eyed and bushy tailed and full of hope and confidence of a good day on the tuna. We arrived at the tuna grounds and found the bluewater at 20 degrees after an hour Captain Tony Davis called up and reported a first fish, a 25 kg fin to The Flight Manager...

We hooked up on Broadbill only to snap line on a 25 kg fish and then pulled the hook on another, we were in the horrors, we had not snapped a line on a tuna for many years and could not figure out why and probably will never, maybe a nick in the line. We had a constellation prize at the end when we stayed attached to one fish Billfisher saw nothing until Glenn threw out a couple of Bloodshot lures and hooked up on a 25kg tuna on the way home. Much to the delight of his crew.

Flight manager with his winning fish Fishraiders scored well on Billfisher..It was a tough day for all

A small fin on Broadbill Billfisher steaming home on the sunset. It was a long run after getting washed down a strong current

The strong southbound currents had washed us down the coast 25 nautical miles so it was a long trip home( photos by Fishraider site)

Everyone had a great day despite the quite tuna fishing.
It will improve shortly as the waters warm and the current backs off.

There are still a lot of tuna to be caught on the Spring run, it will be alate season this year and we predict that Sept, Oct and November will see some hot yellowfin fishing

ONE PERFECT DAY

Having just spent three days including the Fishraider Tri Boat comp I really was dreading another day chasing yellowfin that are very thin at the moment

The last trip (the day after the Raider day) both Broady and Billfisher never turned a reel, I tried desperately to talk my anglers that morning to go snapper fishing knowing the tuna weren’t there. I nearly convinced them but status quo voted tuna and as a result we caught nothing, sometimes it is better to listen to the Captains advice, sometimes a good catch of snapper is better than catching zilch.

Our Monday charter was a snapper trip to my favourite part of the world, down south at Thirroul.
Although I was a little tired from the three long days and late nights back I went to bed with excitement thinking about a good day on the reds with a couple of Raiders.

There is nothing more boring than being a professional pilchard cutter and catching ZIP. It is not what us professional skippers get any joy out of what so ever.

So it was with pleasure and anticipation of a great day on the reds as I shook hands with “Fishraiders” Greg Lee and the Compleat Angler’s Patrick D…..Two anglers, how good is that?
Two anglers also means me and my crewman Chris Hoile can also fish …beauty!

We steamed to the grounds on a flat calm, breathless morning Conditions were perfect for good snapper fishing.

Having arrived I did a sound around to see if we could avoid the jackets, eventually anchoring and fishing floaters.

By 11 am we had almost breathless conditions as we all worked the fish it was obvious to me that both the boys were very good fisherman. However, Pat had never caught a good red so he was keen for a PB…that came when his light spin rod arched and the tussle began. We netted a fine snapper mission accomplished We used light paternoster rigs with a 3 once sinker baited up with striped tuna and pilchards Some of the day we drifted and constantly worked different grounds until success was found.

A beaut sight as a nice snapper appears from the blue Chris hooks up solid

Chris nets another good snapper Even The captain caught a couple

Deckie Chris Hoile catches a beauty . What a great day we both had with Greg & Pat Chris does it again

Chris dehooks a good red Greg Lee with his snapper caught on a floater

Now That's a great feed Greg Lee and Patrick with a couple of snapper from their catch

Pat with his world record jacket Patrick gets a personal best

Yahoo mission accomplished We steam home at 25 knots after one perfect day

Steaming home to a magnificent sunset

Whilst the fish were not as big as we have experienced they were all perfect table size ( up to 3 kg)

We fished hard all day eventually pulled stumps at 4-20 pm we had enjoyed a really productive day with a good bite going most of the day.

The sun was low as a beautiful sunset lit the glassy calm ocean as we steamed at 25 knots back the 20 mile to Botany Bay heads.

Dolphins carved through bait, a whale breached on the horizon and we had fished magnificent day. What a wonderful day fishing with a couple of nice blokes in great weather, good conversation and a great catch of reds and miscellaneous species.

Thanks to my anglers for their great company on the day.

SPRING FRENZY OF YELLOWFIN TUNA……..IT'S ON AGAIN
THE BOYS CRYSTAL BALL WORKS TO PERFECTION

This was our prediction last week….Quote;

"It has been a slow start but the fish will come on in September.
The water is picking up all the time and we predict some red hot action soon."

That was our prediction last report and the crystal ball has worked and worked to perfection on school yellowfin.

BILLFISHER CATCHES A BOAT LOAD OF YELLOWFIN LAST TRIP

Brad Dolman's crew had a wild day on Billfisher last week there skipper dropped them straight into a great bite.

The yellowfin ranged from 17kg to 22 kg great fun on the medium tackle.

Billfisher strikes gold Bloodshot lures ...We swear by them..these were caught on Bllfisher

Look what I caught Mum Happy angler with his fin

I caught one too John Vassala and friend got lucky on a double on BILLFISHER

Fish like this 85 kg model will inhabit our waters in September

Glenn then replicated the action on the Sunday, fishing a rough crappy day, he trolled instead of cubing and had a triple hook up on the Bloodshot lures.

The tuna are very wide at the moment but will work their way closer with the eddy of water that is sitting off us at present.

We caught tuna both cubing and trolling Best lures Bloodshots (as pictured) and bib less minnows
The yellowfin will be with us now until maybe November if this water holds It ahs been a late season but will be a good one maybe worth the wait.

SNAPPER ARE QUIET WITH STRONGER CURRENT BUT WILL SNAP THEIR HEADS OFF IN SPRING

On Broadbill on the weekend we chose to fish for snapper having arrive at the grounds the current had come on and fishing floaters was not working so we driftedd. We caught a feed of smaller reds (fish to 38cm) and misc other species but not up to our normal standard, that's for sure (see previous report and read Fishing Stories and Hints Section) There are photos of some "honkers up to 620 cm" there, and a good yarn about it all

SMALL BOAT WARNING  - WATCH YOUR WEATHER

A warning to all small boats, remember your safety. There are safe limits to observe in a small trailer boat and having spent half my life in one I can assure you that a big westerly will frighten the hell out of you on the trip home (that is if you get home.)

It does worry me seeing more and more 5.5 metre boats 25 nautical mile to sea .We will one day get that 50 maybe 60 knotter and some won't come back.

Please be careful people …..get that weather right and don't take silly risks just for a few fish.

A small trailer boat in a big storm is not a nice place to be.I can assure you and one day it is going to happen.

In our career and that is in my case 50 years I have had to weather a few bad blows and have had my heart in my mouth a few times.

One in '82 that went to 60 knots including a water spout in the dark., we got back to Port at 11 pm cold, shivering and very frightened.

Another in '84 at The Peak that was a southerly buster that went to 50 knots once again in a 5.5 metre Broadbill and whilst they were a great little sea boat, it was horrific.

Then in '91 the best of them all 100 knots at Pt Stephens

That storm blew a few trailer boats over backwards , just picked them up and flipped them over and that was in a bay , imagine being 25 mile out….These days I guess I have learned by my mistakes and will do any thing to avoid bad weather and bearing in mind we are in 40 foot boats that weigh 14 tonne, but in 100 knots of wind they too are like floating corks, so please be careful

You can place you and your crews life at stake by making a bad decision.

Mother Ocean does have a nasty streak in her at times and must at all times be treated with the respect she demands.

WHAT A FORTNIGHT ON BIG SNAPPER ON BROADBILL and BILLFISHER

Another fortnight  of sensational snapper fishing on BROADBILL and BILLFISHER all our crews have caught fish even on some of the windy days.

The winds on a couple of days have screamed up to 25 knots, necessitating anchoring, but even in these conditions we still caught some great snapper.

The rest of the days we have finished in absolute pristine, almost Spring weather. Days of light west winds in the morning fading away to warm and breathless afternoons, making the day a pleasure to fish .

A beaut crew and a great catch of reds A couple of beaut snapper in anyone's book

A snapper that looks like a giant bream Some are not as red as others captain Glenn Hunter with a great catch on Billfisher on Sunday

Chris with a thumper of a fish Gamerod or the human winch fished hard and well

Don't ever give a kid afishing rod, Next thing they're catchin more than you, Luke catches his first Mike comes good on a floater

Look Mum my first snapper Joe worked hard on the floaters all day in the windy conditions

Proud of the effort You Bet Steve with his big snapper Steve's second fish was even bigger

The happy team on Billfisher The winch Anthoney Chaffey and Steve the shooter and Stew The Swordfisherman, what a great haul of big reds

There's nothing better than the first sight of a big snapper They have been spectacular snapper

We catch a couple of salmon on the way Broadbill on anchor and into the snapper on floaters

We have been getting most of the big fish to 6kg on floaters but also have caught some excellent fish on the paternoster rigs by drifting It just depends on the winds as to what will work on the day.
We really do enjoy this style of fishing and whilst the snapper grounds are almost a 20 nautical mile run from port, the scenery on the way is breathtaking.

You get the feeling that you could be in the wilderness, magnificent high cliffs that form the shorelines, water so clear you can see the bottom in 30 feet, waterfalls that cascade down the cliff faces, simply beautiful.

We generally troll a few lures along them and most trips catch salmon and kings on the way, upon arriving we then get the bery going and once anchored settle into some great floater fishing and wait and then the big boys turn up and the action is on.

Great fun days returning with contented anglers who in most cases have caught their personal best snapper 'You've gotta love that as a charter skipper "smiles on dials that's what we love.

THE YELLOWFIN HAVE JUST STARTED THEIR SPRING RUN

Fish like this 85 kg model will inhabit our waters in September

This season the tuna have been slow but we had a crack at them this week and caught two 20 kg fish and that was encouraging .

It has been a slow start but the fish will come on in September The water is picking up all the time and we predict some red hot action soon.

The bluefin have disappeared as the water has warmed to 20 degrees but that will see better yellowfin tuna fishing

"ON THE HOOK" with CAPTAINS ROSS AND GLENN HUNTER….
9/8/07

Once again it is snapper that we have targeted on most our trips and don't we love that.

Lazy days sitting on anchor at our favourite haunt, a little music on the radio and even sometimes the Captain drags out the guitar and strum a few tunes. The weather at last has settled making these days even more pleasant. Fishing light line floaters, feeding back the baits in the current then wham, hooked up to a big snapper. We have had some of the most contented clients, anglers who have caught their first big snapper, to experienced fishermen who love their quality snapper fishing.

A superb Spring day and the snapper are biting their It does Luke's first snapper and on his birthday as well

Maurice reckons there OK Not a monster but perfect table size

Young Luke hooks up on his birthday to his first snapper

I had a great day on BROADBILL with Mike Lysacht fishing snapper at the Hump. We fished in winds on the day gusting to 30 knots from the sou' west, but the lads were all good fishos and fished hard for a good catch of snapper, mowies and pig fish considering the conditions.

It was a great thrill for young Luke who caught his first snapper on his birthday, so it was a double treat.

The next trip with Allen Newton's crew we caught a better catch thanks to the magnificent weather. It does make such a difference the lads saw beaching humpbacks and caught snapper to 4kg in all a great day on the reds.

YELLOWFIN RUN ABOUT TO HAPPEN

We have predicted for a while that the tuna will run shortly I am most convinced that this will now be the case. The isotherm sitting off Botany Bay is going to bring some great tuna fishing in the next couple of weeks.

Although we are heavily booked for tuna trips we still have some days available
Best months will be September / October.

These were the catches every trip last September Every day last season this was common Great catches on our boats

Emu Steve a very talented angler and a great tuna fisherman

Last year in Spring our boats had record catches of yellowfin tuna and our crews all walked off the boats with stretched arms like apes…….and great memories of great days tuna action.

If you would like to join a crew we do share charters at $250.00 per head max group 6 anglers we also do gift vouchers.

COSTS….$1500.00 per day for groups of 6 people or $250.00 per head The day is 10 hours we supply all gear tackle, bait, Captain and deckie to clean those tuna and to look after you.

A TRIBUTE TO A GREAT BLACK FISHERMAN…… NORM JEFFERYS"

What a great days fishing with my two partners in crime Norm Jeffery's and Mark Night.
I've always said "It is great to fish with blokes who are masters of the art of black fishing" and it is an art.

A bit like fly fishing for trout, working out the best runs, the right flys and the best techniques to outsmart the fish .

Norm Jeffreys has fished the Georges River for 50 years A great blackfisherman Norm Jeffery's Stew Case and mark Night with a great catch of blackfish from the Georges last week

Well! To fish with Norm Jeffery's, who probably has passed the (70 too young bracket) is for me a privilege, not only is he a great conversationalist, which is so good on a blackfish session, but he too is a humble man who has forgotten more about blackfish than most of us will learn..Why wouldn't any sane man want to rub shoulders with him?.

He has fished the Georges for 50 years and can pick when the fish have moved off to the next eddy in the tide He can say "Drop down 6inches here Roscoe" and low and behold the bites come gain.

I admire men that have accumulated such knowledge and go through their fishing life with total dignity and a readiness to help others, a fine man and a great mentor to fish with.

I have met other knowledgeable black fisherman and most of them older than me.
You see blackfisherman are a special breed, they always take the good with the bad and after a bad session may say "Well they didn't bite so good today, but it was most enjoyable" and "Ya wouldn't be dead for quids…would ya!"

Maybe as we get a little more mature it is this form of fishing that attracts us I'm not sure.

Some say to me "Why would you want to go fishing on your day off!"…I reply ' "Cause I love it".
Black fishing has been in my blood now for the past five years and whilst I spend a couple of hundred days a year catching yellow fin, marlin mahis etc for our clients on BROADBILL and BILLFISHER when I go black fishing it is for me personally, no customers, no pressure, no rocking boats…………… Just me and a couple of friends on a beautiful river.

On a lonely river of reflections with an occasional screech of a white cockatoo or a white-bellied sea eagle hovering in the sky looking for a mullet, somewhere in the timber a magpie calls
Yeh! that's what I love about black fishing .

The serenity as you watch your float as it dips and then slowly goes down "Don’t strike to early but don't leave it to long either!

You lift your rod and feel the weight and your on……That's what I'm talkin' about
We fished a session on the Georges last week in near perfect weather and for all of us the fish bit so well.

We all had a great time…….Good conversation and a great session on the Georges,

As usual Norm was champion angler but we accept that every time.

A WEEK OF SNAPPER BLISS ON BROADBILL AND BILLFISHER

"AMAZING CATCHES OF BRILLIANT SNAPPER"

At last the weather has settled a little and in between the strong winds we have managed some of the best and most consistent snapper fishing for along time. Catches of up to 30 snapper per trip have been the norm. The fish have been up to 5 kilos to just above legal we have returned many "just overs" during our days.

We have targeted the reds knowing that on previous years, the winter and spring is the time to fish the Stanwell Park grounds.

It is an area that I really do love to fish not just because of the brilliant snapper fishing but also for the places beauty.

We troll the beside the high cliffs past Jibbon to Marley,Garie Bolgo , Burning Palms it makes you feel alive to experience this beauty and then there's the snapper fishing and that just adds to the day.

In targeting snapper we prefer the floater method (read details on floater fishing in Fishing Stories and Hints section on this site) however some days the paternoster rig will work OK.

Paul Hobb's with a beaut snapper he caught on Broadbill on Sunday Mark Rea had a great day on BROADBILL

What good fish..They don't catch them like this in Cowra says Maurice Umina local and number one Souths supporter James Humphries poses with his catch

Hals 3.5 kg snapper Chris with a thumper of a fish

However it is the floater style of fishing that generally catches the big boys I love to see the anglers feeding back their baits in the light current when all of a sudden the line is ripped from their fingers as a big red screams off zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz As the rod arches and it's hit the fan .Then the great sight as a big fish lays on surface at the nets Cries of "What a bloody beauty….. Well done mate" as the big snapper hits the deck.

It is currently my favourite form of fishing, they are so much fun to catch, they eat so well and it simply is a great days fishing.

We have had the pleasure of four great groups of people on the snapper trips, good fishos who also appreciate the fun of a great day on the reds.

Days when I can actually fish and join in the banter, rather than being on the bridge and on the wheel most of the day.

I even get the chance to have a snapper fish sometimes and I do love that.

We get out the guitar and sing a few songs, tell a few yarns in between catching snapper……That can't be all that bad.

Thank you to all my crews over the past week, it has been a great pleasure fishing with you all and I hope you enjoy the photos .

24 fish kept 10 released A good bunch of blokes and a great days fishing on Broadbill

Hal hooks a beauty Ahmin's great snapper caught on Sunday on Lockout

high cliffs on the way down Ivan had a great day on Saturday fishing with Gary Parks

Lockout's Ahmin with a couple of beauties They have been spectacular snapper

BLUEFIN CAUGHT ON SUNDAY

60kg bluefin caught on Rob Curry's Marquis on Sunday

Rob Curry on Marquis caught three bluefin tuna to 59 kilos as did Pat Diasnos on his boat Yum Yum this weekend.

We cubed at Browns but caught only one small fin last week there has been some fish caught at the Mountain but you have to be lucky to find them.

These bluefin are out wide and saviour the coldish water 17 degrees We are going to have a go at them this week so will keep you informed All fish were caught trolling.

The yellowfin tuna will improve and our predictions are that the full moon in August and September will see some great fish caught.

There is a good eddy of water approaching the Sydney area, which will see a major improvement in the tuna run.  I will post pictures of the bluefin when they arrive in next report.

BLACKFISH IN THE GEORGES

I even caught a couple Mark Night and Norm Jefferys with a great catch

On my days off which lately have been rare I have been fishing the upper Georges River for blackfish and doing OK  My friends and fellow fishos. Norm Jefferys and John Kearns and Mark have been catching some nice fish on most sessions…………………..How relaxing is this form of fishing!

Watching a float and taking in the beauty of the river ……………………….Yeah!

Once again we have been hampered by bad weather. When the weather does break we don't have a charter when it blows a gale we have work stacked up…Oh! well it’s the business we are in and there's no use complaining. Some days, a great days fishing will take your mind off the weather woes.

BROADBILL HAS A GREAT DAY ON THE SNAPPER

Hooked up and playing another fine snapper Even the skipper had a fish Now that is an ugly snapper

Jason lands another great snapper Matt and Daniel with a couple of the 21 snapper caught on the day

No one deckie Stew case got into the snapper as well Rugged and majestic cliffs You could be in the wilderness. Instead of 30 km from the city

We all enjoyed the magnificent scenery on the way to the snapper grounds Russell,Allan, matt ,Daniel and Jason with their great catch of quality snapper, we released 12 others on the day

Swordfisherman with the result

Last Monday was a perfect winters day, a crisp morning with a light westerly, the temp on the water was 6 degrees and chilly but the wind was calm as we headed to Stanwell Park to have a crack at some snapper on floaters.

I had not fished the area for nearly 12 months s but knew from experience that it was a great time of the year to have a go.

I personally love the journey down to the "Hump", especially when we troll a couple of lures along the rugged steeped cliffs that make up the eastern boundaries of the Royal National Park.

The breathtaking scenery of lonely beaches, high cliff faces and waterfalls is worth the 20 mile trip alone.

My crew made of Russell Bezett and sons Mathew and Daniel, Allan and Jason were likeminded in enjoyment of the beautiful scenery as they too enjoyed the journey constantly asking about the areas etc..

The west wind abated as I pointed Broadbill's bows to the snapper grounds about 3.5 mile east-ward.

We normally fish 35 fathoms, we use the floater method (for details go into "Fishing Floaters for Snapper" in FISHING STORIES AND HINTS SECTION on this site.

My trusty deckie for the day was Stewart Case (the owner of  www fishraider.com.au ) Stew or "mr swordfisherman" was loving the trip as well, as on the way he made ready the rods, thawed bait and generally kept the customers amused with his light hearted banter.

Having arrive I noticed our boat speed pick up on the wide mark so we spun around and headed back to a shallower spot in 30 fathoms (you do not want too much current for this style of fishing )

We fished 30 fathoms and once the anchor set we had half a knots running southward. "That's perfect I thought to myself.

We baited up with ¾ pillys on the 2/0 hooks with a tiny ball on top of the hook.

As I fed the first bait back it went off with a scream ….Yep they are here I thought to myself as I handed the rod to Mathew… The next two hours was wild snapper action with at one stage every one hooked up at once.

After two hours the bite slowed but we still kept catching them even the Captain got into the action with a big ugly bull headed fish.(see photo)

The weather by now had just got better, we had 22 snapper in the box, however we released at least 10 that were legal, (see photos) and we pulled stumps at 3 pm to troll home very contented fishermen.

What a great day with a beaut bunch of anglers…………………….."ya just gotta luv it sometimes!"

GIANT BLUE-FIN AND BIG EYE OFF SYDNEY

105 kg southern bluefin caught at Browns Mountain The boys with their big bluefin

Fishfinders great big eye caught off Browns mountain Sydney

As I said the hardest part of catching fish on the wide grounds has been the weather.
Last Monday, however was the perfect window and my long time friend and charter skipper Captain Tony Davis decided to fish wide on his boat ''Fishfinder'' He trolled and found a current edge that looked good He decided to have a cube and within no time was on the end of a screaming rod.

After lots of grunting and groaning a 80 kg Pacific big eye tuna joined the boat. (The photo is of poor quality taken from a mobile phone) after a lengthy struggle.

Then the reels were screaming again and two more around 75 kg were also caught.
That's a great days fishing in anyone's books

On the same day another boat East Coastin' trolled a similar area when the tiny lure was devoured by a giant blue fin It was battle stations.all round as line poured from the reel at an alarming rate.

The long fight went on for three hours with every angler having a turn on the rod. The first sight of the big blue fin took the crews breath away It was now dark and they only had a small gaff.

Despite all this, a magnificent 105 kg blue fin joined the deck …A great effort fellas(photo courtesy of fishraider.com.au)

There are some amazing monsters out there this season and when the weather settles it should produce some amazing fishing

"ON THE HOOK" with CAPTAINS ROSS AND GLENN HUNTER
9/7/07

It has been a period of gale forced winds and lots of time in the lounge room rather than on Mother Ocean.

The weather has been as wild as I can remember for the June/ July months Dangerous seas that have been up to 7 metres whipped up with 50 knot gales have not been conducive to good fishing reports.

It is our yellowfin tuna season and the fish are in our waters, it is however difficult to find a window of fair weather to get out and catch them.

We fished Sunday and a more miserable day one could not find, what with rainsqualls every ten minutes and 12 degree weather it made the day tough indeed, but it cannot continue forever and as you know us fishermen are indeed optimists.

BIG YELLOWFIN CAUGHT OFF SYDNEY

Pillipe with his 80 kg yellowfin The big fish was caught on REEL ADDICTION

The heat is on as Phillipe plays the big tuna on 15kg

Congratulations go to Ian Holfourd on his boat REEL ADDICTION  for their fabulous 80kg tuna on 15kg tackle The angler Phillip Batista spent 2 hours on the big fish and now knows what a tough fish they are to tame.

The lads threw three pilchards in the water and got the bite straight away . I can recall doing this on many occasions as well, however I cannot work out wether it is luck or were the fish following the lure brace but did not bite until the pillys brought them up ….who knows!

The boys cubed their big fish, which I believe is the biggest caught off Sydney for many seasons.
A great effort lads!
