“ON THE HOOK” with Captain Ross and Glenn Hunter
JUNE REPORT
What a great season we have had with catches of giant tuna as well as fabulous catches on the reef species. Good catches of snapper from The Stanwell Park area as well as pig fish, morwong, giant jackets then ad. Kingfish, and all round it has been a great start to winter.
BROADBILL CATCHES A BIG TUNA
It was indeed a great day when Peter Bruce caught a monster yellowfin of 72.8kg
The big fish took Peter 2hours and 15 minutes to land, a really great effort from a most exhausted angler at the end.

It brought back memories of a 101kg tuna that took me 4 hours to land and that hurt a lot I was a lot younger then. Peter stuck to the task and did a great job on the rod.
Billfisher, too has been getting amongst them with some very healthy fish.
The next weekend Broadbill went out and caught two yellowfin and an albacore and dropped a marlin at the Shelf.
The very next week we took John Ponting fishing and we trolled every where with no result until right at the death at 4.30pm on the way home George Fisch hooked up a striped marlin on a lumo sprocket. It is a lure that “The Emu” (my long suffering deckhand) drilled some holes in the head and since we have returned from Pt Stephens the same lure has caught eight marlin.
SYDNEY REEF FISHING GOING OFF
In between the crappy weather we really have had some great days, reef fishing.
Catches of kingfish, snapper, mowies, jackets and big flathead, have been the norm.
These days are at accost of $1200.00 for 6 anglers and are from 6am to 3pm.
Great days indeed. See photos of recent catches.
STANWELL PARK TRIPS GOING OFF
These trips are so popular with our crews. A trip to the Hump is like being away from the Big Smoke It is a place I love so much and man can’t you catch some great snapper down there.
Another type of fishing I really do adore, is snapper, these are by far our most sought after table fish and they are great fighters on light gear.
I don't think there is any thing that is so exciting as a big snapper laying on the surface, having just appeared from the depths.
We fish an area called the "Hump' it is about 20 nautical mile from our port Botany Bay, for me personally I have fished the area for 40years
Our normal day starts at daybreak and ends at 5pm long but most enjoyable and productive days on our boats BROADBILL and BILLFISHER.

We had a fabulous rainbow the other day |
Having picked up my crew we generally steam to Marley Point (around 12 nautical mile) and then troll minnows along the cliff face embattlements of the Royal National Park.
We often get kings and a few salmon on the trip down.
Trolling only 20 metres from the shoreline, it is not uncommon to see wild deer, kangaroos, and white-bellied sea eagles as we head slowly southward.
The scenery leaves you with the feeling that you are in the wilderness, it is so wild and untouched…..no houses, no man made catastrophes, just Australiana at its best and ya gotta love that!
This passage may take an hour, but it is an hour that every customer will take in the magnificence of the area and remember for a long time …There place makes me feel good, just to be there. First Marley with its wild beaches, Garie, Burning Palms Era and Bolgo, all just as beautiful as each other.
The high cliffs are now punctuated by grassy valleys, silky white beaches, adorned by the high mountain ranges above, just so beautiful.
We then change course at Thirroul and head sea ward to our snapper grounds
I have accumulated many great fishing spots over the years, some in 25 metres and some as deep as 70 metres .
We choose an area that may look good on the sounder and then anchor; the pre-rigged rods of floater style and paternoster rigs are baited as the deckie starts the berley trail. The anglers grab a rod and get busy in anticipation.
I am first to grab my trusty Shimano Corsair and start feeding back a big lump of striped tuna in the light current.
The bait reaches the bottom maybe 80 metres back and Whack the line is pulled through my fingers with a non-mistakable vengeance of a big snapper on the rampage.
Next thing an angler yells "I'm on too" as his rod bends over and line pours off.
The big reds are netted, accompanied by screams of joy, as they are ice slurry in the fish box.
The sea lazily rolls by as we are fanned by light west winds Broadbill lays on anchor as the sun warms my back, the snapper are biting their heads off, every one on the boat is loving it………an me …….well what do you reckon.
A place we love. Come and join us you will not be disappointed.
We take 6 anglers Cost $1400.00 from 6am to 5pm.

WE ARE BACK IN SYDNEY AND THE FISHING IS GREAT
Both Broadbill and Billfisher have been away at Pt Stephens since late January and what a great season it was. We released 141 marlin of all species, blacks, blues and stripes, caught giant mahi mahi to 25kg caught wahoos and even yellowfin to 30kg.
Pt Stephens to me is my second home, having fished there for 40 years I can walk into the local and be treated as a local.
I really do enjoy the place and its magnificent scenery and a most of all its fabulous fishing.
I always feel sad leaving the place, but we’ll be back there in 8 months, so that keeps the dream alive.
Back in “The Big Smoke” we have been doing a mix of fishing. Last Friday we fished with a great bunch of guys from Armenia We targeted reef species and by 10 am had not caught a fish. The conditions were perfect no wind and flat calm. I thought to myself “Welcome back to Sydney.” But the sea gods were kind and by 3pm we had a great catch of snapper, giant morwong and heaps of big pig fish (these fish are a delicacy)
We also did a game day the next day and caught a striped marlin and three yellowfin and a heap of striped tuna.
The fishing off Sydney is excellent at the moment. Be it reef or gamefishing, so if you are interested do not hesitate to give us a call on 9534 2378

FISHING IS GREAT…………. BOTH REEF AND GAME OFF SYDNEY
We have been quite busy since returning home from Pt Stephens, we have caught a couple of marlin and some big dolphin fish and a few yellowfin tuna to 18kg.
The reef fishing has been really reliable with great catches off the Coogee grounds. Mixed bags of Snapper, kingfish, giant mowies, jackets and my favourites, the pig fish.
As a matter of fact we had a great feed of them last night. The morwong skinned and filleted and done in egg and breadcrumbs are sensational and the pig fish are even better.
There are also some big mack tuna and giant bonito around as well, especially around The Peak.
We have raised a few marlin over the past few trips, but failed to hook them upon the lures. I hate using lures as the hook up rate is so low.
Big dolphin fish are still prevalent out wide with blue marlin making a late
appearance.
STANWELL PARK TRIPS
We are planning our trips to Stanwell Park. The home of the giant snapper soon. Late May and June are the months
Costs $1400.00 for six anglers
Here we fish floaters for the fish and I promise you when a big red runs, it’s something else a great experience. We have caught snapper to 7.5kg.
It is an area where you can bring home big catches of reds, mostly 1.5 to 2kg, perfect eating size.
If you are keen give us a call we do share charters as well on 9534 2378 .

MARCH REPORT
We are still at Pt Stephens and enjoying some pretty spectacular marlin fishing on BROADBILL We have fished with some great groups.
Early March saw us fishing with Alistair Palmer, The boys caught a 21kg dolphin fish and dropped a marlin. It was a big swelly sea on the day and a few of the lads were a
little queezy.
The next group was a one day trip and we had Nick Vitalle (who was with us in 2005 when we released 21 striped marlin in a day) but alas we were not that lucky this trip having raised a marlin but did not catch it.
But none better than Paul Caruana and his team.
PAUL CARUANA CATCHES HIS DREAM FISH AT LAST
Paul thought that he would never catch a marlin, however his dreams came true a fortnight back, when he released a superb striped marlin. thus breaking his drought Friend George too released a marlin as well once again angler’s first. We also caught trag and flathead for the boys.

Well! how things turn around and it is all due to the oceanic currents. Last Sunday we had 27 degree water flowing down and whilst the strong currents have now abated, the water has brought some unusual species.

Three weeks back it was Alex who caught and released his first 80kg striped marlin on Broadbill
Then it was Mike Saramel’s turn ..He hooked up a 75kg striped marlin on stand up tackle and did a great job on the rod. The big fish took 250 metres of line off the big Shimano and took half hour to bring to the trace . Mike and his team have fished with us before at Pt Stephens and they know their way around fishing. A great crew and lots of fun to fish with.
The fishing is pretty wild out there at present, thanks to the warm currents.
The week before 15year old Rick caught and released his first black marlin.
PT STEPHENS IT’S ON AGAIN
We are off to Pt Stephens on Sunday and still have a couple of spots available if you are interested.

"ONE OF THE BEST FISHERIES IN THE WORLD"
Having fished these amazing waters for over three decades I am convinced that this magnificently picturesque place is one of the most productive marlin fisheries in the world and for us lucky New South Welshman, it's right on our door step.
Imagine catches of 16,18 and 21 marlin in a day or 248 for a season that is world class by anyone's standards.
The average size of a Pt Stephens striped is around 80kg and these double figure, per day numbers are achieved by the charter fleet every season from January to late April.
Each summer season there are many charter boats that travel from as far as Cairns to the north and Batemans Bay to the south to join us locals at Pt Stephens.
These boats target the abundant stocks of blacks; blues (and the most predominant marlin) the striped on all types of tackle, be-it fly-fishing, spear fishing or conventional tackle.
However it is not just the brilliant marlin fishing, it is also the superb scenery of the place that I never get sick of looking at, it really is a breathtaking port to leave from and then come home to after a busy days fishing.
The entrance to the port is made up of Headlands and Islands that are remnants of an extinct volcano from a long forgotten dinosaur era.
The highest mountain to the south Tomaree forms an embattlement that protects the mariners from bad weather, making the port a most safe passage for our boats
To the north Yaccabah with its picturesque, almost vertical mountainous slopes and giant wind eroded gorges that the sea pounds into with great force, sending plumes of spray forever skyward.
Always a most spectacular sight as we steam to the bait grounds at first light.
The colours of these beautiful steeped cliffs changes constantly with sunlight, depending on the light of the day.
Then there's Cabbage Tree Island with its western rain forest and gorges full of cabbage trees, home of the tiny Gould's Petrel and a resident family of white-bellied sea eagles.
To the south Little Island and Boondelbah Island they all form the breathtaking oceanic entrance to the Port.
If it is a fisherman's holiday you want and you also wouldn't mind coming back with "Your arms dangling like those of an ape from the stretching they'll get during your stay" then visit us at
Us Captains love the place, not just for its beauty in landscape but also for its camaraderie.
The charter industry works well in this Port, there is a lot of harmony between skippers and that always works well, no petty jealousies, just a bunch of likeminded skippers wanting to catch fish,
Many of us not seeing each other for most of the year then catching up for a couple of months doin' what we do best, catching marlin.
We have achieved seven grand slams IE. a blue, black and striped marlin in one day and I can assure you that there are not many ports that you can achieve this feat.
In the long run "Happy customers, smiles on dials …that’s what I'm talkin' about". And we get that from catching marlin and we work together to achieve that end result for our clients

“ON THE HOOK” with ROSS HUNTER
A Happy and Safe New year to all our fellow anglers and readers. Trust you all had a good one.
Offshore fishing has a last picked up We now have the favourable currents that bring the big fish to us, these currents have been noticeably absent all summer.
Evidence to this is the fact we scored our first marlin for the season last week. The 80kg striped marlin took a lumo sprocket which lassoed his bill, but despite that the big fish stayed connected until anglers Mathew Uys fought it to the boat The marlin was released as all marlin are on our boats. That brought BROADBILL’S total of marlin releases to 3805 fish. That’s over a 38 year period; imagine if we had killed all those fish, I could not lay straight in bed.
Mother Ocean has to be protected from over fishing it cops a pretty good pounding from long lining and shark finning The total number of sharks have been reduced b y 75% and that’s a giant imbalance. All creatures are put there for a purpose.

I heard on the radio that a giant southern blue fin brought just under $40,000,00 dollars and that’s sign that these magnificent fish are in danger of extinction, from overfishing by longlining.
Glenn Hunter on his boat BILLFISHER raised marlin last week .He also caught albacore and a big dolphin fish.
The very next day we headed out with a great team and caught small yellowfin and dropped another marlin.
We have also on our reef days been catching some kingfish at The Peak There are a lot of undersize fish that have to be released but occasionally you can jag a good one, that is a keeper.
Our reef charters have been going well with intermittent catches of kings to 12kg as well as a few throw backs.
Tim Gavin and crew had a good day catching a few kings and misc reef fish inc. a few snapper.
Eddy Johnson’s crew from Blue Chip had a great day except a few of girls got a little sick so we came back into calm waters and did a river cruise We caught bonito and tuna.
Dean Webb of Webb Constructions booked both our boats, but unfortunately the weather was pretty rough , so we came back early and rafted up at La Perouse and had lunch and drinks We caught bonito and stripeys, but the lads had a great Xmas party
PT STEPHENS JUST AROUND THE CORNER
Our Pt Stephens trips are all but full, however we do have a spot for three anglers on March 18th 19th and 20th and that’s on the full moon. Costs $950.00/ angler for three days. This place is pretty sensational; expect dolphin fish to 20kg, striped, black and blue marlin.
If you are interested give me a call on 95342378 and we will get you booked in.
Pt Stephens is my favourite part of the world we have achieved 7 grand Slams (the black, Blue and Striped in one day. Have achieved 21 striped marlin in one day on BROADBILL.
